Lucy Garvin Award

Jim Wescott’s first USTA involvement came in 1995, when he joined the Murraywood Aces. Jeff Stock captained this team based out of Murraywood Swim and Racquet Club in Columbia. Playing #1 singles, Jim assisted his team to the state playoffs in 1995 through 1997. In 1998 he gained a national title at the men’s 3.5 level and competed, with his wife Kay in the 3.5 mixed Regionals.

In 2001, Jim expanded his tennis involvement by leading the effort to bring the Southern Sectional Tournament to South Carolina. He collaborated with Columbia Mayor Bob Coble, Lexington and Richland County Councils, and local hotels and tennis facilities to offer the winning bid.

His vision led the tournament to be honored with two awards in 2003, the Southern Sectional Tournament of the Year and the South Carolina Regional Tourism Event of the Year.

Jim’s proudest tournament achievement however, is in attaining over $123,000 in local government funding and providing a $13 million impact on the Midlands of South Carolina.

In 2004, the Sectionals reached new heights by offering an experience unlike any other. The attendees enjoyed the music of live bands, excellent food and exciting social events.  These factors contributed to making this year’s event the best ever.

Through tireless effort and dedicated leadership the standards have been raised for all future tennis competitions, and for that, Jim Wescott, we are truly thankful.
