LATA Board Meeting Minutes- August 13, 2002

LEXINGTON AREA TENNIS ASSOCIATION

BOARD MEMBERS/VOLUNTEERS

Aug. 13, 2002

The meeting was called to order at 5:30 by Scott Callison, president of LATA

There was a quorum present as follows:

Also present were Jorge Andrew and John Sheffield.

Jorge Andrew, the director of tennis at the new LTC reported on what was happening at the new facility. There has been a lot of activity and good response to it. The Southern Sectionals will be played there in 2002 and 2003. There have been several tournaments, league play and quads going on at the facility, as well as lessons. In Oct. 2003 the State Combo playoffs will be held there. The center is offering frequent user memberships for $300 a year, which will allow 2 day advanced reservation. The feedback from the neighborhood has been excellent. Jorge also announced that he is trying to organize local pro’s and is planning a meeting of Midlands area tennis pro’s on Aug. 23

The Director of the SCTA, John Scheffield reported that there is a new CTA liaison, Graham Cox. He stated that community tennis is one of top priorities of the USTA He also reported that there are some changes that are being considered, such as a dues increase, promote youth team tennis, and organization of pro’s and coaches to better cover areas.

Committee Reports:

Joyce Harrison reported on league tennis. There were 769 adult players plus 205 senior players involved with Mixed Doubles League, totaling 974 in all. Combo is currently running and fall registration is open.

Kids Team Tennis is trying to regroup and increase participation. There were 116 participants in the last season and a LATA team went to the sectionals in Atlanta. Scott Crede, Jack Aldrich and Lib Smith are helping Nancy Powell. They are trying to find ways to make kids team tennis better. They will try to broaden the volunteer base and possibly work with the JTL volunteer base. They also plan some re-organizing.

There will be a coach’s clinic for kid’s tennis on Sept. 21.

It was reported that there would be a meeting on Aug. 19 to discuss plans for the sectional tournament.

There have been several Executive Committee meetings. It was decided to have compensation for the League Coordinator and the League Secretary, Mixed Season was not to be lengthened this yr., and Combo dates were determined. Also the signs have been ordered for the donors to the tennis center. Jack Aldrich was assigned to look at LATA organization. He is forming a committee to work with him to look at league play, development of an annual league calendar, and collection of information on and writing grants.

New Business:

Ken Bickel has resigned from the LATA Board. If anyone has any nominations they are to give them to Tim Hewson.

Also someone will need to replace his responsibilities with posting information on the web page.

The next meeting will be held on Tues. Oct. the 8th at 5:30 at the LTC.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:00pm.
